Tips for getting my cat to drink more water, and how much should they drink daily?

Quick answer

Cats descend from desert ancestors, so they don't feel thirst strongly and drink relatively little water. A good daily target is about 50ml per 1kg of body weight (e.g., a 4kg cat needs about 200ml a day). To boost intake, place water bowls in several spots around the house, use a cat water fountain that appeals to their instinct for running water, or increase the ratio of wet food over dry.
