What does stool color tell me about my dog's health?

Quick answer

Golden brown is a very healthy, normal color. Black (tarry) stool can suggest bleeding in the upper digestive tract (stomach or small intestine) and is very dangerous. Red (bloody) stool points to bleeding in the lower digestive tract, near the colon or anus. Green can mean excess chlorophyll intake or a bile secretion issue. If you see black or red stool, take a photo and go to the vet immediately.
